HIGHGATE CEMETERY

I came to live in London for the second time in 1973 and lived for a while in Highgate. Spent much time exploring it on foot, often walking over the Heath to Hampstead down into Camden, Primrose Hill and the other peripheral areas, discovering how it connected to the rest of the city. Diflucan zithromax,

I remembered Highgate tube station from some years earlier, a glorious spring morning after The 14 hour Technicolour Dream at Alexander Palace in 1967. Ally Pally was huge, dusty and dim inside. I seem to remember going out through some French doors to a courtyard fountain, which is safer amoxicillin or zithromax, walking through a drift of leaves and thinking how it all seemed so Victorian and romantically shabby and neglected. This chimed perfectly with how Britain felt at the time, Zithromax Buy. But here was this new generation inhabiting the ruins of previous versions of Britain, pulling down the dusty curtains and letting the sun shine in again.

I clearly remember a leafy sunlit stroll the morning after. Part of a slightly dazed procession from Alexander Palace through Muswell Hill, then down the walkway into the station under a maze of overhanging plane trees. London seemed like a magical place in the 1960’s, why no antacids with zithromax. The centre of the world.

I felt that I would eventually come to live there, and now it was clear where I wanted to be. Zithromax Buy, That part of north London seemed just right – Victorian and Georgian buildings, broad leafy roads and lots of gardens, parks and green spaces.

By the 1970’s though, things were very different. London was poorer, times were much harder, there were strikes, power cuts, is zithromax safe for fish, IRA bombings. The brave new architecture was by now all concrete and roadways and grey oppressiveness. The 60’s now seemed very distant - another lifetime, a lost era.

I lived in Talbot Road, Highgate, relieved to return to at least one pleasant place, and set out to explore the area again, Zithromax Buy. Buy zithromax no prescription, At the top of Highgate Hill, on Swain’s Lane, behind the Highgate Scientific and Literary Society, I discovered something fascinating.

There was this marvellous overgrown world just behind some locked ornate iron gates set in a long high wall, zithromax z-packs. No-one else appeared to notice it. You could see a wild carpet of grass and moss just a foot away behind the gates. Zithromax Buy, Trees and overgrown buildings beyond. Impossible to resist exploring such a place.

So I climbed over very early one warm spring morning, Is zanaflex compatible with zithromax, before anyone was around, and found myself in a mysterious wilderness of ivy, moss and stone. The cemetery had been shut away so long it had become a woodland. In a few places trees had grown out from the graves, enveloped statuary and stone, ga strep resistance to zithromax, carrying them upwards with slow but inexorable growth, so that bones and strips of winding were visible behind broken slabs. There were rows of mossy mausoleums like overgrown streets and crescents, ivy hung archways and stairways. Everywhere there were flowers and leaves and birdsong and a marvellous atmosphere of timelessness, Zithromax Buy. Generic zithromax,

I found it to be a beautiful and intriguing place and went there exploring many times in spring and summer. Perhaps because I always went in the early morning it wasn’t at all sinister or oppressive. Rather it seemed suffused with calm and the delicate, glimmering beauty of lost and forgotten places that I’ve always responded to, zithromax drug interaction. An uplifting and enjoyable melancholy, a realisation of the passing of times and lives and eras, made even more pleasurable by an occasional awareness of the busy city all around.

Zithromax Buy, What really struck me as remarkable about Highgate Cemetery though, was the way that surrounding city seemed to recede so completely once you were inside. It was like finding a gate into parallel existence. No prescription zithromax, The place seemed limitless, as if you might walk into other landscapes from it – lakes and plains and forests beyond.

I now realise that these Highgate experiences, together with many others, such as my childhood playground of abandoned and overgrown Lancashire factories, is azithromycin the generic of zithromax, Lord Leverhulme’s overgrown gardens at Rivington, then subsequent locations in central and east London, Rome, Paris and New York, Zithromax pill id, combined with the devastated economic state of London in the 1970’s, had all sedimented into the imagery of Cathedral Oceans and The Quiet Man - especially that vision of an overgrown London that is so central to the book.

END NOTE

THE PLEASURE OF RUINS

Highgate Cemetery has since been adopted and maintained (though I notice there are parts of it that are still forbidden to visitors). I sincerely hope it never becomes cleared or manicured, as happened at Fountains Abbey, Tintern and Rievaulx, and appears to be happening in other such places, including the vast and complex ruins of Angkor Wat in Cambodia, Zithromax Buy.

The clearing, maintenance and renovation of ruins may seem vital to their preservation, but it also removes much of their meaning and identity. It can easily destroy the pleasures to be had among them and reduce them to sterile museum pieces. Zithromax overnight us shipping without prescription, Look at Turner’s images of Tintern for instance, and compare them with what we now see.

One convenient aesthetic argument is that overgrowth and ruin can be considered as another sort of patina (though I think they are really much more than this). Patina is a quality that enlightened antique historians have recently begun to assign a value to. Zithromax Buy, Rather than cleaning significant objects, any patination is now left as intact as possible.

(I suppose patina can be defined as accumulated evidence of the effect of time and environment on something. In other words, z max zithromax, what was previously viewed as damage or dirt or decay are now considered to be important, since they are really part of an object, as well as valuable evidence of its passage through time).

I’d like to see us extend something of this sensitivity and value to the ruin and overgrowth that are intrinsic to many architectural locations. Zithromax rythmol interaction, I guess it’s akin to being proud of your wrinkles rather than going for the Botox option.

But there’s so much more to this than patina. It’s a convenient (and true) aesthetic argument, but very far from being the whole issue. There is something much greater underlying all this, Zithromax Buy. I’ll try to describe my version of it, zithromax foodborne illness.

Certain places can have a potency, the ability to arouse wonder, curiosity and the beginnings of understanding, Where is zithromax from, through a kind of osmosis - at least, that’s how it feels. They are fragments of public memory and I believe this combination of nature and architecture to be some physical manifestation of collective memory. Part of the multi-dimensional geometry of understanding. Zithromax Buy, If you can allow yourself to be receptive to the effect of these structures and places, that geometry will begin to inhabit you. You become patterned by it. Then you will have a corresponding internal model that will provide a sort of framework on which you can place further bits of experience, is zithromax ok for sinus infection. That’s as close I can get to describing it.

These places have been of vital importance to me all my life. When I was a child, I played in massive overgrown and abandoned factories in Lancashire and explored empty houses and overgrown gardens, Nizoral tablets with zithromax, gradually becoming aware of their mystery and stillness – and some of their meaning. Through this I gained a deep appreciation of the power of certain places and the beauties of ruin and overgrowth, Zithromax Buy.

What made me return to them so often was the edification of being alone in such places, the pleasures of contemplating them. The living leaves, the light, the rain. The experience of place. The mysterious architectural structures almost hidden beneath. The changes taking place - interactions of time and nature, the passing of eras. An overriding sensation of stillness and wonder.

It’s becoming increasingly difficult to experience such things in our overcrowded country, as living space becomes ever more rare and expensive, so such places are inevitably demolished, cleared, renovated or preserved so thoroughly they lose all potency.

My lucky early experiences supplied me with more than a lifetime’s worth of themes to explore - in music and writing and imagery– and also initiated some understanding of connections in architecture and history across Europe to America and beyond.

So, ironically, these experiences of ruin and dissolution turned out to be deeply civilising to someone who began as a fairly uncivilised kid growing up in an area of steep industrial decline.
