This beautiful, dark, analogue electronic soundtrack by John Foxx And The Maths is described as ‘eerie’, ‘evocative’ and ‘a triumphant score of chest-crushing anxiety’ by The Independent and The Guardian. John Foxx and Benge’s set of dystopian science-fiction themes were first heard in the critically acclaimed stage play of E.M. Forster’s ‘The Machine Stops’ in 2016. This album also features new mixes created especially for The Machine. Abstract, atmospheric vocals by John Foxx and Elizabeth Bernholz (Gazelle Twin). Artwork is by Jonathan Barnbrook.

John Foxx’s B-Movie (Ballardian Video Neuronica) was recorded and assembled for a cut-up movie by Foxx and Karborn inspired by the ideas and work of British writer JG Ballard. Screened as part of Brighton’s Cine-City festival in late 2012, the pair presented ‘a film and sound seance manifesting J G Ballard neurones. Mobilised by ultracolour and inframusic, anatomised hallucinogenetics and proximity psychopathagens.’

The album features two collaborations – ‘Geometry, Collision And Coincidence’ with Benge and ‘Disaster Series’ was recorded with another long-term associate, Steve D’Agostino. All the music is exclusive to this soundtrack except ‘The Other Side’ is an extract from the forthcoming Electricity & Ghosts album (due for release in 2015), which just happened to fit with the visuals. The soundtrack runs as a continuous piece of music in the first part of B-Movie including effects and links that relate to the film.

The second half of the album features all the individual tracks plus ‘Dashboard Melt’ which Foxx recorded for the project but in the end didn’t use. Jonathan Barnbrook’s stunning artwork for the album features images created by Karborn.

Music by John Foxx & Steve D’Agostino.

Images by Karborn. Design by Barnbrook.

Evidence of Time Travel is a unique investigation of the terrors and pleasures of temporal displacement. A sinister sonic architecture of drum-machine-music and analogue synthesizers.

Opens with ‘The Forbidden Experiment’, as surveillance TV glitches and the ghostly, ripped-up multi-temporal universe of Evidence of Time Travel infiltrates the labyrinth of dark electronica.

Span forty years in a moment . . . ultimate time transfusion . . . skin crackles, a rhapsody in flames… witness images of torn, ruthless smiles through the crashed distortion; try to recall the future memory of a figure lost on a distant shore.

JOHN FOXX & THE MATHS REMIX HOULE & KITTIN

John Foxx & The Maths recently remixed a collaboration between Items & Things label boss Marc Houle and Grenoble born techno/electro legend Miss Kittin. According to Kittin: “When Marc told me John Foxx would do a remix, I couldn’t believe it, like back to the roots. It’s exciting to hear a new wave legend can bring his punk touch to a minimal modern track, when our passion for analog synth and irony merges together!”

John Foxx and Jori Hulkkonen have collaborated on a new EP, featuring 4 brand new songs, 2 remixes by film-director David Lynch and a radio edit of the exquisite lead track ‘Evangeline’. The other songs – ‘Strictly’, ‘Something Is Coming Down The Avenues’ and ‘Can’t See You Anymore’ – are as dream-like and strange as anything in either artist’s catalogue. For Foxx, the closest reference would be his 1981 album, The Garden but the surrealist feel of the new material is more displaced and dislocated. There’s a strong sense of melancholy, loss, destruction and also romance. Perfect material for David Lynch to reinterpret and re-imagine, quietly stretching out ‘Evangeline’ with the sound of surf, a drum machine heartbeat and the twang of a 50s guitar. It’s a beautiful, evocative remix and a shimmering instrumental version.

David-Lynch-006

According to Hulkkonen the idea was first discussed back in 2010 ‘when John Foxx And The Maths played a live show at the Roundhouse in London with me supporting as a DJ – and I also ended up on stage to play on John’s song, ‘Underpass’.’

Foxx and Hulkkonen had worked together before on two singles, ‘Dislocated’ in 2005 and ‘Never Been Here Before’ two years later, but the pair were keen to try something new. ‘What I wanted to do was try a somewhat deeper way of collaborating,’ says Hulkkonen. ‘Creating an EP where the tracks are linked thematically, emotionally and sonically. Thankfully John agreed. Now, some three years later I’m happy the record is finally done and it indeed carries the elements of mystery and surprise it was intended to have. And the fact that David Lynch is on remix duties further adds to the conundrum that is European Splendour.’

Foxx, who wrote all the lyrics, describes the EP as a ‘Lynchian love story set against the background of a convulsed Europe – where New York is the capital of France, Rome has moved to Manhattan and declared itself a republic, and New Neon Blackpool has outstripped Las Vegas and London as the playground of Sino-Russian oligarchs.’ Adding to the sense of mystery, Foxx goes on to say: ‘it’s based in a Eurozone where dark forces insinuate the cafes, alleyways and penthouses’

Either way, European Splendour is like an internal movie recorded across Europe and featuring a new dream combination of Foxx, Hulkkonen and David Lynch. Theartwork is by Bowie collaborator Jonathan Barnbrook, with the cover featuring a new sculpture by Foxx. Film icon remixes. Musician sculpts. Hulkonnen’s career s as diverse as anyone. This is the world of European Splendour.
